TADs – By the Numbers

Abstract

The impact of skeletal anchorage on orthodontic treatment has been profound and lasting worldwide. We have gone from the early “Wild West” days to refined and sophisticated methods supported by both in-vivo and in-vitro investigation. However, innovation and change continues to proceed apace. At this conference, many of the presentations in our area of interest are case series or case reports. Drawing upon the fact that the world’s most experienced and accomplished TAD experts are in the audience, this presentation will seek audience participation with presented research findings to establish the best answers to the following SIX frequently asked questions about TADs:
1.Miniscrew failure rates – what are the primary etiologies, scientific basis, clinical management, and highest risk factors
2.Arch distalization – indications and limitations – are bicuspid extractions a thing of the past? Must we include third molar impaction in the discussion?
3.Popularity of TADs – coming or going? World wide trends – cost/benefit for the patient.
4.Side effects and complications – management and prevention of the most common problems encountered in clinical practice with TADs
5.Stability of anterior bite closure – Clinical experience vs Clinical studies – why etiology is so important.
