All about Openbites; When do we really need TADs

Abstract

It is essential to do a correct diagnosis in openbite cases as in any other malocclusion. First of all a differentiation has to be made between the skeletal and dental problems. We are mainly looking at the vertical lower facial dimension, upper incisor exposure at rest and when smiling and lower incisor exposure. Based on diagnosis treatment approaches will include extrusion of the posterior teeth and or intrusion of the upper and or lower incisors and the combination of these three objectives. Stability of openbite correction is difficult to predict and depends on the causative factors. Treatment modalities includes not only the use of TADs but also treatment with orthognathic surgery, full braces and even treating openbites using thermoplastic aligners.
