Aligner and Miniscrew Anchorage Treatment of a Challenging Malocclusion
The most recent systematic reviews of the literature on the efficacy of aligners in achieving orthodontic movement have demonstrated that this type of appliance still has some important limitations. In particular, it is unlikely that bodily displacement can be achieved in a predictable fashion within acceptable time-frames. Nevertheless, aligners continue to grow in popularity among patients, for whom aesthetic and removable solutions are highly desirable. Traditional fixed appliances are no longer well tolerated by either adults or young patients, and it is therefore vital to find ways to meet their expectations.
In this lecture it will be shown how skeletal anchorage can be used in conjunction with aligners to successfully resolve even complex cases. The timing and the means of using miniscrews alongside aligners in maxillary contraction, crowding and distalisation cases will be discussed, and the efficacy of palatal miniscrews – which provide not only an excellent source of anchorage but also an aesthetic solution – will be demonstrated.
