Jung-Yul Cha is an Associate Professor in Orthodontics, Yonsei University, where he completed his orthodontic specialty training in 2002. He was a visiting professor at the University of Southern California (2004-2005) and at Stanford University (2012-2013). He is a deputy editor of the Korean Journal of Orthodontics (KJO). His research focuses on orthodontic treatment with CAD/CAM technology. His recent paper described a virtual model, and it was published in the 4th issue, 2014, of Am J Orthod Dentofacial Orthop as a cover issue.

Title of Talk

How to optimize treatment outcomes using CAD/CAM based orthodontic system?

Abstract

Despite achieving a proper bracket position during bonding, orthodontists often put much effort into replacing braces and bending wires during the detailing and finishing stages to achieve high-quality outcomes. These adjustments result from variations in tooth morphology, skeletal discrepancies, and deficiencies in biomechanics during tooth movement. For the most part, it is difficult to predict treatment modalities without information about final teeth occlusion.
Computerized 3D virtual dental models are currently available in our clinics. The use of virtual models has resulted in improved treatment outcomes. Recently, a digital model combined with a high technology computer-driven system was developed for applications with a virtual dental set-up and fabrication of customized brackets. This new technology aims to overcome individual discrepancies, such as tooth morphology, and skeletal architecture.
In this presentation, goal-oriented treatment planning with a virtual dental set-up will be introduced. Then, a clinical application will be presented to demonstrate a customized orthodontic bracket designed to optimize camouflage treatment. Finally, the accuracy of computer-generated, indirect bonding will be discussed with examples from scientific studies and clinical data.
